The birth of the Buddha

The birth of the historical Buddha, take place in Lumbini on border of present day Nepal, Buddha was born in royal Hindu family, from his father the king Suddhodana and his mother the queen Maha Maya.

On the night the Buddha was conceived the queen Maya dreamt that a white elephant entered her right side and ten months later Siddhartha was born.
As was the Shakya tradition when his mother queen Maya became pregnant, she left Kalipvastu for her father's kingdom to give birth, on the way at Lumbini in the garden beneath a sal tree her son was born.

In India the tradition say “ the Buddha was born in full moon day”, seven day later Buddha's mother died, the infant was given the name of Siddhartha meaning “he who achieves his aim” during the birth celebrations, the hermit Asita journeyed from his mountain abode and announced that the child would either become a great king or a great holy man.
